Gateway to jungle and sea
Kuching is the capital and the most populous city in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Kuching is a major food destination for tourists and the main gateway for travellers visiting the attractions of the Sarawak state. The proximity to the national parks makes Kuching an ideal starting point for day trips to wild coastal and rainforest destinations (like Kuching Wetlands or Bako National Park).
Underestimated the size of Borneo
I left Brunei and reached Miri, where I took a taxi straight from the bus station to the airport. Time was running out as my bus was delayed, but I reached my flight and flew to Kuching. There I had only one night to spend. I had totally underestimated the size of Borneo. It is the fourth largest island in the world and about twice as big as Germany. I had only 9 days time, far too little time for an island where you can easily spend 3 weeks.
Cats everywhere
Kuching means "cat" in Malay and there are many cat sculptures in the city. I had a nice nocturnal walk along the river promenade, which certainly looks nicer without rain. Other than that I did not see much of the city, because it was raining all the time and already early the next day I had to go back to the airport and flew back to Kuala Lumpur.
