Cultural & colorful with many hills
Valparaiso, a city on the Pacific coast of Chile close to the capital Santiago, is very popular with tourists because of the many graffiti, colorful houses, cultural events and the picturesque location on many small hills on which the city was built.
The character of the city is considered world famous and is the subject of numerous literary, musical and artistic interpretations. The city is regarded as Chile's cultural capital. The historic city center is a World Heritage Site. With all the many hills, the city fortunately also offers many lifts and cable cars, which are very popular with tourists.
Garbage everywhere
However, it was one of the dirtiest cities in all of Latin America. Really everywhere there was garbage, this doesn't even fit to the rest of Chile. Besides, for my taste there were already too many tourists and there is not really much to do. You could see all the beautiful sides in a few hours.
Trying pisco, the national drink
It was good that I met my friends from Mexico and Honduras here again, whom I met for a few drinks in the evening. We drank the Chilean national drink, a colourless brandy. It tastes better in a cocktail like Pisco Sour when you mix it with sprite than on its own.
With them I drove to Vina del Mar, a seaside resort not far away, the next day. But the beach was so brutally crowded, especially by Argentineans, that we only took a short walk and then returned to Valparaiso.
Already the next day I drove to the next town in the north of Chile, La Serena.
