A hostel made out of shipping containers
After my return from Paraguay I checked into a cool hostel in the Brazilian border town of Foz do Iguazu. The hostel "Tetris Container Hostel" had a cool concept, the dormitories were located in colorfully painted ship containers. This sounds less comfortable than it actually was.
The city is considered to be the starting point for visiting the famous Iguazu waterfalls.
The biggest waterfall system in the world
The Iguazú Waterfalls consist of 20 larger and 255 smaller waterfalls on an extension of 2.7 kilometers. This makes it the largest waterfall system on earth. Some of them are up to 82 meters, the majority is 64 meters high. The water volume at the falls varies from 1500 m³/s to over 7000 m³/s. The main waterfall is called Garganta del Diablo ("Devil's Throat") and is a 150 meter wide and 700 meter long gorge.
Actually I planned to visit them first from the Argentine side. But since the Argentineans were on strike, there were no buses crossing the Argentine-Brazilian border and I went to the Brazilian side instead. I recommend to visit both sides! While the Brazilian side is worthwhile mainly because of the good panorama of the huge waterfall, the Argentinean side has the advantage that you can get really close to the main waterfall. Especially for this I returned 2 weeks later again to visit the Argentinean side of the waterfall.
It was unbelievable to see these natural spectacles up close. You can literally feel the power of the water. Everywhere it rushes and you see rainbows.
By chance I also ran into my Korean buddy here again, who I had met in Asuncion.
Many racoons around
During my lunch break a lot of racoons where lurking around. Everywhere in the park you see these animals. There are signs warning to feed them or leave food open, because the animals just grab it.
The next morning I boarded the plane to Porto Alegre in the south of Brazil.
