Spontaneously joining two Polish siblings

In my hostel in Constanța I met two Polish siblings. The open-minded sister immediately invited me to come with her to Vama Veche and because I had no other plans, I accompanied her. One of the best decisions of my trip.

So I joined Natalia and James and drove to Vama Veche. We booked a room together in the Punk Rock Hostel. Punk rock music was unfortunately not played in the hostel, and yet it was a great hostel.

Beach vacation for rock music lovers and hippies

In the seaside village of Vama Veche, hippies and rock music lovers alike feel at home. The place used to be a meeting point for individual tourists, artists and nonconformists. In the meantime Vama Veche has been commercialized by the attraction of this reputation, but camping on the beach is still allowed. The atmosphere is relaxed. And it all costs very little money.

Unlike most Black Sea resorts, there are no high-rise buildings here, only small guest houses or hostels. Instead, there are cool bars on the beach where rock music is often played, definitely not the usual mainstream music you hear everywhere else. In summer, live bands perform almost every evening and the bars are usually open around the clock.

"Romanian wine is the best!"

The two owners of the hostel had a lovable and quirky way. In the evening we bought a few bottles of wine, because as the owner said again and again: Romanian wine is the best, the other wines are easy to forget! One of them even opened a good bottle of wine for us. "Is good?" he asked us. Oh yes it was! After a little predrinking we went to one of the beach bars and danced there on the beach. That was great!

naked-beach-view during our lunch

During the day we chilled on the beach or played volleyball. For our lunch we walked to the supposedly best fish restaurant of the village. Indeed, the fish tasted excellent there, but the view was quite unusual. While eating, we inevitably stared at naked people, as the nude beach was right below the restaurant.

For dinner we had Mămăligă (corn porridge) with sour cream, which my Polish buddy couldn't get enough of. A cheap and filling meal.  Apart from that the Romanian kitchen does not offer much for people who do not eat meat.

A short trip to Bulgaria

The next day we wanted to cross the Bulgarian border, which is only a few kilometers away. My Polish friends wanted to enter Bulgarian soil at least for a short time. We tried hitchhiking, but all the cars passed us, so we finally made our way to the border on foot.  We stayed there only a few minutes and hiked back again.

Favorite place in Romania

With a heavy heart we left Vama Veche the next day. The owner was already knocking on our door because we were late with the checkout. We still felt quite tired from the previous night. But no problem: in Vama Veche things go very relaxed. For me the place has the best atmosphere in whole Romania.
