Port city similar to Burgas but bigger

After two more nights in Burgas, I traveled on to Varna in the north which also lies on the Black Sea. The city is comparable to Burgas, only that everything is one dimension bigger. Again I met many interesting people from all over the world in my hostel called Nomado Hostel.

The port city is the cultural centre of north-eastern Bulgaria and is also internationally known for its festivals. Varna is the most important traffic junction for the north-east of the country. Varna has the second largest port in Bulgaria after Burgas and is well connected to the Bulgarian rail and road network. The proximity of the city to several summer resorts turns Varna into a lively tourist centre during the summer months

Culture in the park

In the city I enjoyed many hikes through the huge park or lay down on the beach, which are much fuller than those in Burgas. The park are many small events like people dancing salsa or young Bulgarians jamming rock music or rapping hip hop music.

A beautiful cathedral

The most beautiful building of the city is the The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral which is also the third largest cathedral in Bulgaria. Another impressive sight of the city is a bit outside the center. The gigantic monument for the Bulgarian-Soviet friendship is now quite dilapidated and rotting on a hill. Until you get up there, you have to climb more than 300 steps, which is not easy in the heat.

After 5 nights my journey continued to Sliven.
